In this image, a red velvet theater curtain stands alone against the austerity of the Western landscape, functioning as both monument and interruption. It signals the long tradition of staging—of framing experience, assigning roles, and masking vulnerability through the architecture of spectacle. The curtain becomes a surrogate for the human urge to craft narrative even in spaces that resist it.

The work folds European operatic grandeur into the mythology of the American frontier. The cultural residue of Vienna, Milan, and Moscow is reimagined through the rugged textures of sagebrush and sky. This tension echoes an earlier era when tintype wagons rattled across the West: traveling doctors, medicine-show illusionists, and itinerant tin type portraitists, who transformed their dusts and chemicals into acts of wonder.

Curtains positions itself in this lineage—at once theatrical and anti-theatrical.

Nature moves on, indifferent to the gesture.
